Well, we've been very busy over
the past month. We've already stopped two of the box scheme
rounds and Miles has been surprised by the numbers who've decided
to transfer to his scheme and is finding it hard going making
sure everything goes smoothly. Early problems should be ironed
out pretty quick once everything becomes more of a routine.
In the fields we've still got
some crops producing well, the purple sprouting broccoli is
probably our best so far despite the huge amount of damage caused
by pigeons, parsnips are putting on a late flush before they
go to seed, and we're still lifting leeks, also our best ever
producing about 60Kg per week since November.
As well as these over-wintered
crops we're still harvesting our salad from the glasshouse and
tunnels, and are looking forward to seeing some early potatoes,
french beans, courgettes, chard, carrots and celery in about
six weeks time from crops already growing in the tunnels. We'll
also be planting our cucumbers and tomatoes in a few weeks so
should see the first cucumbers in May and tomatoes in June.
Outdoors we've got overwintered
onions, garlic and broad beans all looking good, and we sowed
some turnips, salads, spinach, beetroot and carrots over the
past month which are all covered with fine mesh to keep the
pigeons and rabbits at bay. Last week we got round to planting
out all our potatoes; Rocket & Swift are our earlies, followed
by Remarka, Desiree and Sante as well as some Pink Fir Apple
and a few others; these got a good watering over the weekend
and hopefully will all grow quickly so they can reach a decent
size before the haulms are hit by blight.
This week we're hoping to get
some more carrots sown outside as well as our parsnips, and
hopefully get some of our seedlings in, we've got some sickly
looking chard plants, lettuces, spring greens, summer cabbages
and cauliflowers and some early calabrese all ready, as well
as some pak choi, kohl rabi and quicker lettuces for planting
in a tunnel.
