A few summer cabbages have survived the slugs. Wide field margins & rough grass give plenty of space for predatory beetles to overwinter. January King cabbages growing well despite being planted late.
Jerusalem Artichokes in flower. Red & Green Kales. A great crop of leeks, past the worst of the leek moth damage.
Lettuces just before the frost. Onions laid out in our shed to dry before storage. Swedes reaching a useable size at last.

Looks like it'll be monthly updates for the winter, while the work is often harder things don't change as quickly as they seem to during the spring and summer. We'll be spending most of the winter out in the fields digging carrots, parsnips and leeks, and cutting various greens, with a bit of time spent pruning and spreading manure.

The past month has seen us finish harvesting the onions, potatoes and squash and bringing these inside to protect them from frosts where they can be stored until late spring. We've already had 4 frosts, which puts us equal with the grand total we had last year, although this has been combined with glorious days and so far we've seen less damage than I'd have expected - our white cabbages and a late crop of calabrese are still standing in the field, and even though we didn't cover the lettuces with fleece until after they'd suffered one frost they're looking good again.

Unfortunately both Matt & Sonia have decided to leave us over the past month. Sonia had been knocked off her bike a few months ago and has been suffering the effects, especially as the cold weather has drawn in, and Matt has been offered another job on a larger Organic farm in Devon where he will be dealing with various livestock which he has been interested in experiencing for a while now. It's looking likely that Rowan, my brother will be coming over from Germany for a while to give us some assistance, especially during January when Rosey will be over in Australia.
