No update in September, the weather was so poor
up until the middle of the month that I didn't really feel like
putting my feelings into words - it would hardly have made good
reading.
Still, after the rains ended we managed to catch
up with a lot, all the onions finally dried out and are now heaped
on the barn floor awaiting sorting before being stored in pallet
bins, the squash are all in, the butternuts ripening in the glasshouse
and the rest already stored in the barn. We've just about finished
harvesting all the potatoes - the Remarka and Desiree are in,
and we'll hopefully get the Sante and the last of the Pink Fir
up next week. Unfortunately this year we've seen a fair bit of
blight affecting some of the tubers, and so we're going to have
to be constantly checking our stored potatoes and removing any
rotting ones that we find which is quite a shame as this is the
largest yield we've had in quite a few years.
Blight has also hit the glasshouse tomatoes in
a few areas, so we've removed the affected plants. The plants
that are left have now lost most of their remaining leaves as
we head into autumn so it will only be a few more weeks until
we pull out the plants and get it ready for some winter salads.
We have a third of a tunnel with some established salad mix so
it won't be long before this is ready, another tunnel is full
of rows of tiny carrot seedlings, and next week we will get a
few other tunnels planted with lettuce and spinach to provide
us with some nice leaves during the winter.

The tomatoes in the glasshouse
are looking pretty sick due to the cold wet summer

In a few areas blight is affecting
the plants, the first time in years.

Despite the problems we're still
managing to harvest quite a lot of decent tomatoes.

Remarka, a good
flavoured blight resistant potato.

Adding a bit of colour
to our peppers with the variety purple beauty. |
This year the timings for our late
tunnel of french beans seems to have been pretty good. |
