Apologies for the lack of updates, August is one of the busiest
months for us and we've been flat out finishing the planting,
constant weeding & loads of harvesting. The last of our outdoor
crops went in yesterday, a real sign that winter isn't far off,
and we'll be looking at getting a few tunnels planted with mixed
salads very soon.
Thanks to everyone who turned up for our open day on Sunday,
it was a lovely day although the turnout was well below previous
years, we managed to get the place looking very tidy considering
the difficulties we've had this year.
We're rapidly approaching autumn, and sadly are now seeing the
effects of the terrible weather earlier this year. The sweetcorn,
which did so well last year and tasted fantastic, is looking likely
to barely produce anything from waist high plants, the cabbages
& calabrese planted during the worst of it are so far behind
we'll count ourselves lucky if we do see much of a crop, and the
runner beans have gone from looking amazing six weeks ago to nearly
dead. This is due to them not bothering to put out deep roots
as the top few inches were saturated as they grew, now the ground
has dried out they're unable to get at the deeper water and so
the beans have become tough quickly and the plants are looking
very sick.
I notice from the riverford website that they have been putting
loads of imported produce in their boxes recently blaming the
weather. Our boxes have contained all UK produce throughout, with
the vast majority coming from our own land, and, while it's going
to be difficult over the coming months I don't see this changing.
